St Ignatius of Loyola and solidarity with the marginalised
July is treated as ‘the month of St Ignatius of Loyola’ by the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), ending with his Feast Day on July 31. A key part of his teaching is on solidarity with the poor, the marginalised, the voiceless. He wrote 'If our Church is not marked by caring for the poor, the oppressed, the hungry, we are guilty of heresy'.
Rather than simply viewing the marginalised of our world as receivers of charity, Ignatian spirituality asserts that Jesus is physically and spiritually found on the margins, meaning that we must 'walk' with the poorest, the most oppressed in order to truly get to know Christ.
This requires more than just putting a few pounds in the collection basket, or saying a few prayers, important as these are. It means playing our part in the struggle for social justice and in working to make the world a better place for all of us. To honour St Ignatius this July, let each of us, as individuals and collectively, seek to love God and our neighbour by looking for some way in which we can bring about change where we live.
CALLING ALL GARDENERS!:
To mark the Season of Creation in September, there will be a free plant and seed giveaway in both St Mary’s and St John Vianney parishes.
More details will be given closer to the time.
It would be brilliant if you could start collecting seeds (store them in a paper bag in the fridge) or rooting cuttings now, in time for September. Have a think about any indoor or outdoor plants that might need a new home. If you have plants like poppies, foxgloves or marigolds and would like to know how to collect seeds, please speak to Lydia. It might be fun as a project for the school holidays. Thank you!

Sea ice serves as the earth's 'air conditioner'. It reflects sunlight away from our planet and regulates the global climate. As well as this, it provides a vital hunting ground for polar bears, supports marine life ranging from algae to beluga whales and acts as a highway for northern indigenous communities. It's important!
The Arctic is warming up much faster than the rest of the world and we need action to put the brakes on this trend. ‘Arctic Sea Ice Day’ is intended to highlight this crucial part of our world, and what needs to be done to save and protect it. Check out the 'Arctic Sea Ice Day Toolkit', by simply typing that phrase into your search engine, and find out more. Remember, we only have this Planet; there is no Plan B.

CAFOD PETITION – GLOBAL DEBT CRISIS:
Money is flowing out of countries that can least afford it. Funds that should be spent on essential public services is instead paying huge debts to rich foreign banks. Often the countries have paid their original debt back several times over but will never clear it because of sky-high interest. We need to keep up the pressure on the UK government, who can take some very real and practical steps which would make a big difference to the world’s poorest countries who are being devastated by this crisis. You can read more here about the case of South Sudan.
Please sign our petition to the Prime Minister and help us call for a debt system that is fair and works for everyone. You can either sign online by scanning the QR code or the petition will be available to sign after the 11:00am Mass this Sunday and next Sunday 12th July.

UPDATE ON THE FUTURE OF HOLY FAMILY CHURCH:
Very many thanks to everybody who took part in the two meetings that Mgr. Philip Inch led. The report of what was said at those meetings was circulated at Mass last Sunday. The next step will be for Mgr. Inch to report on the meetings to the Council of Priests, probably in October, which will then make a recommendation to the Archdiocesan Trustees.
The Trustees will make a decision when they meet in the Autumn.
People have also suggested that we should explore ways to prayerfully support each other at this time; I am very happy to work with you on this.
I promise to keep you updated on developments.

‘This month is Plastic Free July’ when we are encouraged to reflect on our use of plastic, particularly single-use plastics. When plastic particles, collected from pristine Antarctic waters, were visible under a microscope the scale of plastic pollution was brought home. We don’t have to travel far to witness this ourselves: in soil, on grass verges and in rivers and seas. Plastic degrades very slowly in the environment, in many cases taking hundreds of years.
Plastic Free July – Be Part of the Plastic Pollution Solution
This month we can try to limit our use of plastic: perhaps buy a water bottle, a reusable coffee cup, or a nice tote bag, or resolve to buy loose produce whenever possible.

QUIET RETREATS FOR ADULTS THIS OCTOBER:

FROM FR PETER McGRAIL
UPDATE ON THE FUTURE OF HOLY FAMILY CHURCH:
Very many thanks to everybody who took part in the two meetings that Mgr. Philip Inch led. The report of what was said at those meetings was circulated at Mass last Sunday. The next step will be for Mgr. Inch to report on the meetings to the Council of Priests, probably in October, which will then make a recommendation to the Archdiocesan Trustees. The Trustees will make a decision when they meet in the Autumn. I’m afraid that at this stage, I cannot give a more precise timescale. I do understand that this is very painful for many of you - a church is more than a building. It is rich in memories of your loved ones and of special events in your lives. Several of you have raised practical questions, which I shall discuss with the Parish Council next week. I’ll get back to you through the newsletter.
Minutes of the Parish Council are also posted on the St. John Vianney parish website.
People have also suggested that we should explore ways to prayerfully support each other at this time; I am very happy to work with you on this.
I promise to keep you updated on developments.

LIVESIMPLY
We aim to live more simply, sustainably and in solidarity with others.
The Pope’s Prayer Intention for July is respect for Human Life. This is also at the heart of the LiveSimply message which endorses an aim to live in solidarity with our global family, particularly those living in poverty. Pope Francis introduced the concept of ‘Integral Ecology’ in Laudato Si’. This invites us to see damage to the environment and social and economic systems as interrelated.
As Pope Benedict wrote: ‘every violation of solidarity and civic friendship harms the environment’.
We are called to contribute to a future where both the well-being of the environment and humanity
are prioritised, with human dignity at its core.
During this month can we try each day to pray with Pope Leo for the respect and protection of human life in all its stages, recognizing it as a gift from God.

The Day for Life is the day in the Church’s year dedicated to raising awareness about the meaning and value of human life at every stage and in every condition.
This year it is Sunday 21 June 2026
Archbishop John Sherrington said that:
“The day will invite us to reflect on the humanity of the unborn and to acknowledge with compassion the deep grief experienced by parents who lose a child before or shortly after birth.”
Simple action for everyone: Take time out to say a prayer for those bereaved of a baby – may they eventually find peace and healing though the loss will always be felt. St Catherine of Sweden is often invoked for women who have suffered a miscarriage and for healing of grief.
