I am writing these few notes before leaving for Perth, where hopefully we will have had a productive week.

Most of the community, including Fr Tony Hunt, managed to get to Scotland, leaving just three Redemptorists in residence at Bishop Eton:

Frs Jimmy Smale and Tony Johnson and Brian Russell. Fr John Milcz has been looked after at Christopher Grange and Fr Barrie O’Toole has spent the week in Ripon with his sister. Unfortunately, Fr Barrie is not well again and we ask you to renew your prayers for him as he awaits the decision of the specialists on what will be the best treatment for him in the coming months.

ASCENSION DAY: The Bishops of England and Wales have restored Ascension Day to the fortieth day after the Resurrection and so it will be celebrated this coming Thursday. So please note the usual Holiday of Obligation times.

FIRST COMMUNIONS: May is going to be a busy month. This year at St Mary’s we are experimenting with small groups making their First Communion at weekend Masses right through the month. Please surround the children and their families with your love and your prayer. May they be truly blessed and may their joy enliven the whole parish. Then on two Saturdays in June we will have celebration Masses and parties for the children. I am very grateful to our team of catechists and the families for making this new venture possible and pray that it will produce much fruit.

ADOREMUS: As its contribution to the unique event of the Eucharistic Congress in September, Redemptorist Publications have produced a magnificently illustrated booklet, Adoremus Extra. It has 124 pages (including the Freddie Freckles story). Copies are available at £4.75. It would be wonderful if every family had a copy so that we can all deepen our understanding of and devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. Adoremus Extra will also provide us with a wonderful souvenir of the event.

EXPOSITION: Exposition will be from 6:30pm-7:30 pm EVERY Friday and continue at this time during the months of April and May. All welcome!

PARISH LISTENERS:  The interviews will continue up until Pentecost and we are delighted that so many people are willing to offer their views to the Listening Team. However, we still need to connect with a wider section of our parish community to achieve a full representation of views.

The interviews are very informal and will only take about fifteen minutes of your time. The questions are very simple, for example:

  • What is your overall impression of the parish?
  • What strengths and weaknesses do you see now in the parish?
  • What would you like to see grow and develop over the next year?
  • What priorities do you think we should be working towards?

This is a great opportunity to have your say and shape the future of your parish. If you would like to have chat with one the Listening Team, please contact the parish office and we will link you up with a Listener.  Your views really do count! Thank you.
